Making your living space feel more like a home can be a bit difficult if you are renting or running on a limited budget. You can’t exactly crack open a can of paint to add a splash of color to a room, nor can you go crazy at your local store buying every decor piece that catches your eye. You may think that it takes a ton of money, or even time, to spruce up your home once you have the basic necessities in, but there are plenty of small decor changes that will make you love your home more.

If you are looking to introduce a bit of change to your living space, consider trying out the following small decor changes that will give your home a new and improved look with minimal effort and damage to your bank account:

Add some lighting

Lighting can do wonders for a space, especially when a room is too dim and dark at night when you need to study, or if a lamp is too bright for some late-night binge-watching sessions.  Consider the different lighting options you have around your living space and if they truly work for the space or if it is just what you are stuck with since it is what you have or if it came with the space. While a ceiling fixture may be too bright for late-night binge-watching, a string of fairy lights or something similar can bring the lit warmth you need without impacting your viewing experience.

Or, maybe a part of your room is too dark for your lighting because the main lighting fixture is too far away to provide sufficient lighting. In that case, try adding another light closer to where you need it – a string of lights for a cozy vibe, or a reading lamp for a productive and well-lit study space. Take lighting one step further by introduced colors – install a few color-changing bulbs around a room to make hanging out with friends even more fun, or to set the mood for the perfect party space.

Personalize a photo or memento wall

Think about all you love in your life – your family, friends, or pets – and how you may or may not have photos of. Or, maybe a collection of your favorite movie posters or album covers. Take anything printed and make a wall piece out of it. While you may not be able to paint a wall due to your budget or rental agreements, you can add much-need color and visuals to a blank wall with printed images.

You can go simple by arranging prints into a straight line or block or get a bit more creative by making a more elaborate shape or design with the print. Hang prints up with a variety of items: decorative washi tape or pins, frames, or even on clipped on a strung up clothesline to add another decorative element. The simpler you go with hanging up, the easier it will be to redecorate and rearrange when you want to freshen up the wall.

Get in your greens

Bring some nature into your own living space by bringing in some plants to make their home in an empty corner or on a sad-looking shelf. With a seemingly endless variety of houseplants available, do some research to find what plants best fit the space you are planning to put them into. For example, if you are going to be placing a plant in a room with limited light – you won’t want to be putting a succulent that needs plenty of light to thrive. Put care into not wasting money on plants that will not survive in the are you are placing them in!

If you are known not to have a green thumb, fear not. There are plenty of fake plants out there that look just as great as the real deal and will not need the same amount of care (just be sure to dust them off regularly to have them looking fresh!)

Add some texture and color with fabrics

While this small decor change can get a bit pricey depending on what you are looking for, there are still ways to make this small decor change without breaking your budget. Your couch may just be that piece of furniture you collapse on at the end of the long day or for a much-needed catch-up on your favorite TV show, it can be a decor piece regardless of how “loved” or “used” it looks. Pick up some blankets with varying textures and colors to match your decor theme (fleece, knit, etc.). Drape one over your couch – try strategically placing it over any stains that it may have acquired over time – and store extra ones in a decorative basket to the side.

In addition to blankets, you can pick up a couple of decorative pillows to throw on your couch. You can always change them out for holidays or when you feel like your space needs another small decor change.

With the addition of one (or more) of these small decor changes, you will love your home even more – happy decorating!
